Military Organisation
Rome was one of the strongest countries, they had a ranking in military you have 10 people inside 1 tent which is called a tent party. 8 tents make a century which contains 80 men and 6 centuries make 1 cohort, cohorts contain 480 men, 10 cohorts make up a legion containing 360 men and 120 horsemen. A legion is a large group of soldiers an they are controlled by the legionary.
joining the military
The requirements of becoming part of a legion is you must be a roman citizen and over the age of 17. Another requirement is that you need to be recruited by an officer. The roman army also had auxiliary, an auxiliary is someone that fights for the roman army but is not a roman citizen, if they fight for 20 years in the army and retire then they were given roman citizenship.
military weapons
the legions and the auxiliary had different weapons, the legionary would have a javelin, short sword about 60cm long and would have square shield, sandals, armour and helmet.
training and taCtics
It is said that the Romans trained once they were recruited, they committed to the army full time. The Roman soldiers would go on 30km walks wearing their armour and holding their equipment, they would do this three times a month, the roman soldiers will also fight each other in a mock battle to practice.
There were two tactics they used one of them was called tortoise, everyone in the legion would group up and use their shields to block the arrows by placing some at the top and some at the front.
The second one was repel cavalry, repel cavalry is when soldiers group up with all their shields on the ground and their spears up so that when the horseman ran into then the spears would kill the horse.
